In the period between the world wars in Russia there arose the need for a strong
but modest watchdog, which would be suitable for military use. After a long term breeding process,
the Red Star division attained an unbelievable result - the Black Russian Terrier (BRT).
In 1955/56 puppies started to come into the the hands of the best breeders-amateurs as well as those
in prestigious Russian clubs. In 1958 the first BRT standard were set. They were based not only
on the best working qualities, but also on the beauty of the individual dogs.
In the 80´s BRTs started to take part in important international expositions, where they
achieved remarkable success. In 1981 the BRT was acknowledged as an independent breed.
In 1984 it was officially admitted by the International Canine Federation (Fédération Cynologique
Internationale - FCI) and the breed Black Russian Terrier was established under
law number 327.
For many years the BRT was used as a guard dog and through this exhibited remarkable adaptibility.
Apart from its health, vitality, modesty and striking intellect, it combined the best and typical
qualities of its ancestors :
